National Leadership Positions

As laid out in the National Constitution

National President
Executive Vice President (EVP)
Secretary-Treasurer
National Vice President
National Board Member


Eligibility:

  • must have been in good standing throughout the two dues periods prior to, and the current dues period including the date of their nomination;

  • must be at least 18 years of age upon taking office;

  • must have been an active member for twenty-four (24) months prior to the date of their nomination, and;

  • may not be a Management Employee as that term is defined in Article VIII.G of the SAG-AFTRA Constitution and applicable SAG-AFTRA policy.

  • In order to serve as a National Officer or Board Member from a Work Category, a member must have been a declared member of that category for the twelve (12) months prior to the date of their nomination.

  • In order to be eligible to serve as a member of the National Board or National Officer from a Local or group of Locals, a member must have been a member of the Local or group of Locals for the twelve (12) months prior to the date of their nomination.


National Committee Member

Eligibility:

  • must be a SAG-AFTRA member.

NATIONAL PRESIDENT

Term: 2 years. Elected by the entire membership

Responsibilities:

  • Chair of the national board and sets the meetings’ agenda

  • Chair of the national executive committee

  • Sits on every national committee “ex officio,” meaning they can’t vote or make motions

  • Appoints the chair of every national committee with approval from the national board

  • Seats every national committee with approval from the national board

  • The official spokesperson of the union

  • Default negotiating committee chair

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT (EVP)

Term: 2 years. Elected at Convention by all delegates.

Responsibilities:

  • Sits on the national board

  • Supports the national President

  • Chairs meetings in the absence of the President

  • Assumes presidency in case of vacancy

SECRETARY-TREASURER

Term: 2 years. Elected by the entire membership

Responsibilities:

  • Sits on the national board

  • Chair of the national finance committee

  • Oversees quarterly financial report & annual budget

7 NATIONAL VICE PRESIDENTS (NVP)

Term: 2 years. Elected at Convention by the position’s corresponding delegates:

2 NVPs represent the two largest Locals:
Los Angeles // voted on by LA Local Convention Delegates.
New York // voted on by NY Local Convention Delegates.

2 NVPs represent two groups of Locals:
Mid-sized Locals: Chicago, Miami, New England, Philadelphia, San Francisco-Northern California, and Washington-Mid Atlantic.
// voted on by the Convention Delegates from those 6 Locals.
Small Locals: Arizona-Utah, Atlanta, Colorado, Dallas-Fort Worth, Hawaii, Houston-Austin, Michigan, Missouri Valley, Nashville, Nevada, New Mexico, New Orleans, Ohio-Pittsburgh, Portland, San Diego, Seattle, and Twin Cities.
// voted on by the Convention Delegates from those 17 Locals.

3 NVPs represent three of the four official categories of SAG-AFTRA members:
Actors/Performers // voted on by Convention Delegates registered as Actors/Performers.
Recording Artists/Singers // voted on by Convention Delegates registered as Recording Artists/Singers.
Broadcasters // voted on by Convention Delegates registered as Broadcasters.

The Dancers member category does not currently have a National Vice President representative.

Responsibilities:

  • Sits on the national board

NATIONAL BOARD MEMBER

Term: 2 or 4 years depending on the Local and # of votes received. Elected by their Local’s membership.

Responsibilities:

  • The national board oversees and controls every aspect of the union: general management and direction, policy & rules, oversight of the locals, budget, bargaining and striking, appointments, discipline, and constitutional amendments

  • Four quarterly national board meetings per year

  • Deliberate and vote on national board actions

  • Hires the national executive director

  • Nominates, approves, and removes the union side of the Board of Trustees of the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan, the SAG Pension Plan, and the AFTRA Retirement Fund

NATIONAL COMMITTEE MEMBER

Term: 2 years as Chair, Member, or Alternate. Seated by the President and approved by the National Board.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend scheduled meetings of the committee

  • Plan and implement the committee’s activities

  • Meeting frequency varies depending on the chair and nature of business

    Types of committees:

  • National executive committee

  • Constitutional & negotiating committees

  • Negotiating/Standing committees (ie. Commercials, TV/Theatrical, Animation, etc.)

  • Service committees (ie. Conservatory, Organizing, Communications, etc)
